Jon Gray will start for the Rangers for Friday's first pitch at 8:05 p.m. ET. He'll face fellow RHP Aaron Civale for Cleveland to begin the first of a three-game series. We'll identify a bonus betting angle for Guardians-Rangers below.

Cleveland and Texas will meet for the first time in 2023. And while they both may lead their respective AL divisions, both need to create separation from the pack as the Guardians lead by 0.5 and the Rangers by 2 heading into the season's dog days of summer.

Civale (2.56 ERA) has strung together a quietly consistent season for Cleveland. He recorded a win in his start one week ago giving 0 ER in 7 IP against Kansas City. The RHP has only allowed more than 2 ER in two of his ten starts this season. He's only averaging 4.4 strikeouts, but pitched for six innings or more in his last four outings.

Gray (3.29 ERA) has been about the same in the strikeout department at 4.6 with a handful more starts than Civale. He's taken a loss in his last three and has been winless since June 2. Gray has walked multiple batters in four consecutive games and has surrendered 3 ER or more in three of his last four.

The Guardians have had favorable results against the Rangers having won eight of the last 10 meetings. Nevertheless, the Rangers have been trending south having lost three straight series in a more competitive AL West race.

The entire AL East owns a better record than the Guardians. Any postseason light coming from the AL Central will come from winning the division and despite plenty of health issues, Cleveland has won 13 of their last 20 and must sustain production to keep the Twins beneath them

While Texas owns the best WAR (22.2) and wRC+ (122) in baseball, the value on Cleveland is too attractive.

Action Network's Charlie Disturco thinks the starting pitching gives Cleveland a bump here, especially with better bullpen support and an offense that's been feeding on pitchers that allow high contact rates:

When you look at this matchup, Jon Gray is a pitcher that I have continually faded start after start after a dominant first couple of months. He’s got a lot of issues; while he does limit barrels and hard hits, he does have a low strikeout rate, and he doesn’t generate many swings and misses.

I think the biggest key is that he forces a lot fewer ground balls this year, and, given the fact that he is striking out fewer batters as well, there’s going to be more opportunities for dangerous spots for the Cleveland offense to take advantage of.

They’re an offense that has been trending upwards over the last 15-20 days. They’ve been around the league average rank, as opposed to the 25-30 range they’ve been in all season long. They don’t strike out, and they put the ball in play. That’s something that Gray has been able to mitigate, but I don’t think it’s going to happen here. Jon Gray’s xBA is his worst since 2020, and his xSLG is back up above .400.

When you look at the pitching matchups, I think Civale is a significantly better pitcher than Jon Gray, and I give the edge in the bullpens to Cleveland, even with Clase’s step back this season. Even with fully rested ‘pens, I still give the edge to Cleveland here.
